Far Cry 4 scales the Himalayas and drops this November
Latest open-world shooter entry shakes up the locale, but hopefully keeps the mayhem
Ubisoft today announced Far Cry 4, the latest in its open-world first-person shooter series, and it’ll shift the action away from the tropical jungle and head towards some fresh terrain for the franchise.
Set to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on 20 November, Far Cry 4 takes place in Kyrat, a region in the Himalayas under the grip of a self-appointed ruler—who’s likely more than a bit bonkers, based on the box art and the antagonist of the last game.
Additional details are few, but the new location is likely to provide a unique array of fun opportunities, including snowy areas and different kinds of wildlife. The Himalayan setting actually leaked a couple months back, along with the as-yet-confirmed ability to ride elephants. Given that the regional announcement was on point, we’re inclined to believe we’ll soon be riding high on those towering beasts.
Of course, with the E3 gaming conference nearing in just a few weeks, Ubisoft says we’ll have to wait until then to actually see the game in action. Ubisoft Montreal is again heading up this latest entry, with support from Red Storm Entertainment and Ubisoft’s Kiev, Shanghai, and Toronto branches in the publisher’s usual multi-team approach towards tentpole open-world games like these.
Far Cry 3 earned a hearty five-star rating in our 2012 review, as the weird and intense shooter wowed us with its unpredictable moments, wide selection of action and entertainment to savor, and picturesque settings to cause chaos within. We’re surprised to see a sequel to such a large game coming in six months, but that’s not a bad thing in our book.
